From a school dropout to a Head Teacher
Mariam dropped out of school after having been sexually abused and becoming a mother at the age of 12. She thought that marriage was the only option she had after dropping out and at the age of 15, she had three (3) children. Her husband continuously abused her rights as a woman and beat her several times and denied her access to their family income which she contributed to through their family farming activities under the pretext that she could not count it because she was a school drop out. This marked the turning point in her life when she decided to go back to her father who had eleven (11) school going children apart from herself and pleaded to him for another chance to re - enroll her in school regardless of her age or having become a mother. Going back to school was such a tough journey which she did not give up on even when her school/ classmates always made fan of her because she was older and they were conversant with her past.
"Going back to school is one of the best decisions of my life." She remarks. With all that i passed through after dropping out, i did not envision my life ahead without education and this is what gave me the strength and determination to stand against all odds and humiliation from my classmates because i did not want a similar experience"
"There is no life for a girl without education..." She remarks.
She holds a Bachelors of Arts with Education from the prestigious Makerere University, a post graduate in Monitoring and Evaluation. She is a Head Teacher of a public secondary school and a co-founder of Hindu Asha Foundation.
